The thick and soft uterus lining contains a lot of blood vassels, so the breaking of the uterus lining produces blood alongwith other tissues. This blood and other tissues come out of the vagina in the form of 'bleeding'.
The breakdown and removal of the inner, thick and soft lining of the uterus alongwith its blood vessels in the form of vaginal bleeding is called mentrual flow or mensuration.
