How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every shining scale?
How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcome little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!

The poem deals with the theme of deception. It draws our attention to the people who outwardly seem friendly but wait for an opportunity to strike at innocent people who remain unaware of their real malicious intentions. The poet warns us not to get carried away by their sweet smile or attractive looks, because looks are deceiving.
