how drinking water can be contaminated even in a coverage drainage system?

There are very small microbs which are microscopic that are present in water.Even if the water seems to be clean ,there remains some bacteriaand microbs which are already present in water .So before drinking water ,there should be some process to make the water clean otherwise,a person may fall ill and have various diseases like Jaundice.So one should have a aqua guard or any type of filters which are used in homes for the purpose of making the water pure before drinking .
