Elements are classified as follows:

(1) Metals :

(i) They have a lustre.

(ii) They conduct heat and electricity.

(iii) They can be drawn into wire hence they are ductile.

For example, gold, silver, etc.

(2) Non-metals :

(i) They have no lustre.

(ii) They are poor conductors of heat and electricity

(iii) They are not ductile and malleable. For example, iodine, carbon, etc.

(3) Metalloids : These elements have intermediate properties between metals and non-metals.For example, As, Si, etc.
