The Great Elephant Census shows that savanna elephant populations in 18 countries declined by 30 percent. Most of the animals counted were in protected areas. A $7 million, comprehensive census of African elephants has found that the population decreased by nearly a third between 2007 and 2014.
That's because humans often take the land where elephants live in order to farm and develop it, which results in a loss of habitat. Because of this Asian elephants have disappeared from around 85% of the areas where they used to live, leaving elephant populations spread out over smaller areas...
