Organisms differ in their form, structure and mode of living. Hence, based on their similarities they should be grouped. The grouping of related organisms helps us in studying their evolutionary relationships. Classification is the division of organisms on the basis of characteristics into groups and sub-groups.

According to ncert

The more characteristics two organisms have in common ,more closely they are related, the more recently they will have a common ancestor

More different characteristics two organisms have, more remotely they are related, have had a common ancestor in the remote past
