The function of the respiratory system is to exchange two gases: oxygen and carbon dioxide. The exchange takes place in the millions of alveoli in the lungs and the capillaries that envelop them.

Oxygen enters the trachea via the nostrils and is transported to the bronchi which further divides into bronchioles and further to alveoli.
The alveoli has a large surface area and the exchange of gases take place using osmosis.
