The space shuttle takes about 8 1/2 minutes ( it varies from mission to mission) to attain orbit at a speed of 17,500 mph (5 mile per second) so it doesn't muck around .To do this it has to accelerate at 34 miles per hour per second which is an average of 1.6 g for 8 1/2 minutes continuous , very impressive .
