I think it wasn't bad. At a time when the world was facing the threat of a third World War, India took this initiatove along wothother countries. It led to:
A good inage of India across the globeSome respote from all the tensions; a way to end all problems sometime in the future. However, you need to understand that India played the NAM card when it suited her. During the '71 War, it was revealed how India had entered into secret deals with Russia in case either country enters a war. There were other deals with Russia as well, which led to the USA establishing its presence in Pakistan.
Overall, the NAM was pretty successful in convincing the world to shed all animosity yet help India maintain its defences and incline towards Russia. A smart move.
Edit: the NAM might not have done much on the global stage other than being a symbolic gesture, but it was lretty successful for India as I've mentioned. The USA might have imposed embargoes and sanctions but at least our borders were secure.
