Portia discusses with her maid Nerissa the scheme of her father's will by which her suitors must choose one of the three caskets in order to win her. Some of the suitors have already come in hope of marrying her;but portia makes fun of them and shows her dislike. Nerissa reminds her of Bassanio whom she had found quite attractive. Portia become melancholic or sad because she is afraid that she will not be abke to marry whom she likes.A suspense is also created in the scene that who will choose the correst casket.
