According to it if an indain king died. And had no son then his all kindgom comes under british crown. No one is allowed to give the kingdom to the adopted son. This enraged indian people which later on became the main cause of revolt in 1857

Doctrine of Lapse was an annexation policy devised by lord Dalhousie. according to this, any princely state or territory under the direct influence of East India Company would automatically be annexed if the ruler was either manifestly incompetent or died without a male heir. the right of adopted son as a successor was denied by this policy. many provinces were abducted under this policy. this enraged many kingdoms which later joined 1857 revolt.
