The Doctrine of Lapse was one of the main political causes of the Revolt of 1857 since it threatened the royals, the common man and was openly seen in terms of illegal possession.
What was the Doctrine of Lapse?
The Doctrine of Lapse was the brainchild of Lord Dalhousie. According to the doctrine, any ruler who did not have a successor, could not adopt a successor. After the death of the ruler, the princely state would automatically be annexed by the British.
What were the effects of the doctrine?
- Threat to the royals- Many royal families that did not have a biological heir were threatened by the Doctrine of Lapse. Since they could not adopt an heir, it was clear that the British would take over their states. The annexation of many states, including Satara and Jhansi led to a feeling of rebellion amongst the royals of strong princely states.
- Threat to commoners- When Awadh was annexed because allegedly the Nawab was not a capable ruler, the common man suffered a lot. Those employed by the Nawab were rendered jobless, while the British did not do anything to improve their lot. Instead higher taxes were imposed on people, making the people suffer even more.
- Illegal possession- As the British occupation of India continued to grow, the people of various Indian states began to protest against the illegal occupation of the lands. At that time India was made up of many princely states, and the accepted system of rule was monarchy. The king was considered above all. So, when one kingdom after another fell into British hands, the feeling of ill will towards the British began brewing as well.
All these aspects made the Doctrine of Lapse a reason behind the Revolt of 1857.
