How feathers are a protective covering for birds in winters

The birds adjust feather position from stimulation of the nerves where the feather meets the body. This helps them glide through the water. It also lets them puff out the feather, trapping air to keep them warm

The feathers of a bird have small air pockets in them as we know that the air is a bad conductor of heat, it does not allow the heat of bird 's body to transmit and loose it heat. Hence the feathers of the birds protect them from the cold.
