Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany on 30 January 1933.

After acquiring power he set out to dismantle the structures of democratic

rule.

1. The Fire Decree was passed on 28 February 1933, when a

mysterious fire broke out in the German Parliament building. It suspended the

civic rights like freedom of speech, press and assembly indefinitely.

2. The Communists were his arch enemies. He quickly sent

most of them to the newly established concentration camps. The socialists,

democrats and catholics were arrested and killed.

3. The famous Enabling Act was passed on 3 March 1933. It

established dictatorship in Germany. Hitler gained the powers to control the

economy, media, army and judiciary.

4. To control and order the society in the ways that the

Nazis wanted, special surveillance and security forces were created.

5. He invested heavily in armament and chose war as the

way to come out of the economic crisis.
