★ PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM (PDS)
-------------------------------------------------------------
(1) It is a significant step taken by the government of India to ensure food security in India.
(2) In the early years the coverage of this scheme was universal, that is, for both poor and non-poor.
(3) Later,to make this scheme more targeted and effective, in 1992 Revamped Public Distribution System (RPDS) was introduced in 1,700 blocks of the country.
(4) Again, in July 1997, Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) was introduced as a renewed attempt to make PDS more targeted.
(5) Further, in 2000 two special schemes were launched => Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and the Annapurna Scheme (APS) with special target groups of 'poorest of the poor' and 'indigent senior citizens'. The functioning of these two schemes were linked with PDS.
