Would-be suitors had to choose from three caskets. The golden one was inscribed with “Who chooseth me will gain what many men desire.” Inside was a picture of a skull. The silver one said “Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves.” Inside was a picture of an idiot. The lead casket said “Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath.” Inside was the portrait of Portia. The Prince of Morocco chose the gold; the Prince of Aragon chose the silver. Bassanio chose the leaden one and was given Portia’s hand in marriage.
