A few decades ago, the only way to communicate people from other parts of the world was through letters. Telephones and Telegrams were not wireless. So, communication was difficult and people had a paradigm that the other part of the world is far away just as they did not know what is actually going over there. Due to the internet and tv, people can gain information within seconds, there is live broadcasting all over the world. This has made the world closer.
It is just the human brain. It used to assume that the other part is far away since it did not know it and now vice-versa.
