How have computer chess programs changed over time?

Until very recently, computer chess programs were based on “mini-max” search. Basically, you build a “tree” of possible moves.

The “node” at level 0 represents the current position. The computer has a choice of three moves (this would be greater in a real chess position) A, B, and C which lead to the three positions represented by nodes at level 1. For each of these positions, the computer’s opponent has three moves which lead to the positions at level 2. You continue this for as far as you can in a reasonable amount of time. There any many who could answer this question in more detail, but the peograms running on on a mobile phone can now easily beat the world’s finest masters every single game.

I am summarizing, but chess is essentially three games to a skilled player - the opening, the middle game, and the endgame. They strategy for each phase is like a completely separate game. Computers can essentially play perfect ches arbthr beginning and the end of the game, but humans have a theoretical chance in the Middlegame.

Chess programs have evolved to the point where their moves are beyond human understanding in many cases.

The most fraustrating part is that while humans can no longer beat a computer, those same computers play and beat one another, but at such a high level that it no longer even makes sense to compare humans against computers for chess for the same reason humans don’t run foot races against automobiles. It would violate current common sense.
