Answer:

Mountains are natural barriers between two land masses and travel in the old times due to inaccessibility and trade was not possible. Mountain passes provided roads, which enabled travel, transport and therefore trade, Even as on today most of the travel for trade takes place via roads between land masses and travel through the passes is normally the shortest route for such travel and transport, giving rise to cultural exchange and trade.

A very good example is the old SILK ROUTE. There are plans to develop it even today. Another good example is the PAN AMERICAN highway.

History teaches us a lot of lessons, if you only are ready to learn from it. After all it repeats itself, so said the wise men !
