Quite early in her life Helen had only a few books in raised prints-“readers” for beginners, a collection of stories for children, and a book about the earth called “Our World”. The first connected story she read in May, 1887. She began to read seriously only during her first visit to Boston. She was permitted to spend a part of each day in the Institution library. She would pick up books and read them, whether she understood one word in ten or two words on a page. As her mind was very receptive, she remembered many words and sentences. “Little Lord Fauntleroy”, a story book, was the first important book Helen read with understanding. It was about a little boy. Miss Sullivan read and explained it to her. Iater, MrAnagnos had this story embossed for her. All through her childhood “Little Lord Farmtleroy” was her sweet companion. From this book she developed true interest in books.
