himalaya was formed when the indo australian plate after breaking from the gondwana land collided into the much larger eurasion plate. due to this coliision , the sedimentary rocks in the geocyncline rose to form the mountain system of himalayas.

due to the uplift of himalaya, a large basin was formed at it's base in the due course of time, this basin gradually got fiiled with alluvium brought by the rivers from the northern mountains and the sourthern plateau. this is the northern plains and how it was formed.
