Answer:

Water is necessary for life. Water is needed for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes.

Three-fourth of Earth's surface is covered by water bodies. 97 per cent of this water is present in oceans as salt water and is unfit for human consumption. Fresh water accounts for only about 2.7 per cent. Nearly 70 per cent of this occurs as ice sheets and glaciers n Antarctica and other inaccessible places. Only one per cent of fresh water is available and fit for human use. So it is very important to conserve this precious resource. And yet we are contaminating the existing water resources with sewage, toxic chemicals and other wastes. Increasing population and rapid urbanisation has led to over-use of water resources leading to water pollution and scarcity.

Water scarcity can be defined as a situation when people don't have enough water to fulfil their basic needs. India is one of the many countries that are facing water scarcity today. In Rajasthan and some parts of Gujarat, women have to cover long distances on foot in order to get a pot of water. In cities like Bangalore, a family has to spend from Rs. 15 to Rs. 20 to meet their daily water needs. The problem becomes severe during summer months when availability of water decreases again. A recent study has revealed that about 25 per cent of urban population lack the accessibility to fresh water. Also there are several cases of privatisation of water bodies. This often leads to water scarcity in the nearby areas.

There are different methods to deal with water scarcity. Rain water harvesting is the best and most suitable method. Forest and other vegetation cover reduce surface runoff and recharge ground water. So, practise afforestation. We can also promote water conservation through media and by conducting public awareness programmes.

By practising these simple steps we can conserve water and ensure the availability of water to future generations. So don't tarry; start saving each and every drop of water. Let our motto be “Save water, save life, save the world”.

Answer:

How I motivated my friends to save water

I have lots of friends, some are from my school and some are from the same locality. A few of them became my friends because we share the same interest in games like cricket.

I have been learning about water scarcity across the world due to pollution, increase in population and wastage. I decided to talk about water conservation to my friends whenever I get the opportunity. I usually give them the statistics and what it would be like in the coming years. This catches their attention and curiosity. I told them that we have always taken our precious water resource for granted as if it is impossible to exhaust it. But now we must change our attitude towards water.

I tell them why water is our most important resource and also the most abused resource. Half of the world’s largest cities have been facing water scarcity. Water scarcity can be defined as the lack of freshwater resources to satisfy water demand. Population growth, industrialization, rapid urbanisation, rising needs of irrigation and increase in domestic water usage have accelerated the demand for water. Pollution of rivers and lakes will create extreme water scarcity in all major cities. On the earth’s surface, 71% of the land is covered by water and other 29% by the land. In that 71% of water, only 3% of water is usable for human consumption. Survival without water is impossible, so water conservation and the prevention of water wastage is vital for life on Earth.

After sharing the statistics I told my friends about water conservation. This means utilising water efficiently to reduce wastage. It includes recycling used water so that it can be used again. Water conservation refers all the policies, strategies and activities to sustainably manage the natural resource of fresh water.

Now they have understood why saving water is vital for the present as well as for the future human need. The response from my friends is positive and encouraging. We all agreed to save water and reduce scarcity of water. Our main points for conserving water are-- prevention of dripping of water from taps, quick repair leakage from water pipes, turning off taps when not in use while brushing teeth, reusing water after washing dishes, fruits and vegetables for watering garden plants and flowers. At times we also gather our friends of friends and carry out cleanliness drive on lakes and rivers. And we plan to spread the word on the importance of saving water to more people.
