India acquired great reputation in the commercial field during the period eight to eighteenth century.
the trade of India during the 18th century can be classified under three distinctive periods.
- from 1707-1757
- from 1757-1793
- from 1798-1813
- India was a major player in the textiles in the early 18th century , but my middle of the century India lost most of it export market and some of its domestic market too.
- With an estimated production of 25% in world industrial output during 1750, India had fallen to 2% of production in 1900.
- However, the trade in India prospered under the British East India Company, despite the ongoing war in Europe and India. The company first took over India's export market than its domestic market. This is termed as De-industrialisation in India.
- The number of factories in West Bengal and other part of India continue to grow under the Company. The goods produced in the respective factories were subject to strict of Councils in Calcutta. the goods were carefully scrutinised and instructed to improve the quality of goods.
Thus, we see a dynamic change in India's trade deuring the early and late 18th century.
