how is a comets visible to us?

This is because of their  \bold{comas\:and\:tails} reflect sunlight or even glow because of  \bold{energy\:they\:absorb} from the sun.

However, most comets are  \bold{too\:small} or  \bold{too\:faint} to be seen without a telescope.
