how is almunium used to join rail track

Generally the aluminium in powdered form is used in the thermite reaction which is very much exothermic reaction in nature...thus it melts the iron rails and the gaps are filled to join them again

aluminium  is used to join railway track by thermit reaction 
equation:- FeO3 + 2Al gives Al3O3 +2Fe +heat
