The process they use is called the Haber process. It involves a reversible reaction, where nitrogen (from the air) and hydrogen (from electrolysis of water) are reacted to form ammonia. It is an exothermic reaction. The optimum conditions are 450 degrees Celsius and 200atm pressure, over an iron catalyst for maximum yield. Hope that helps!
