Gametes are produced by the gametophyte , which is the hyploid generation. The female gametophyte produces structures called archegonia, and the egg cells from within them via mitosis...The resulting zygote then gives rise to an embryo , which will grow into a new diploid individual (saprophyte).

Kuldeepnehra: Egg cell contains half number of chromosomes which becomes zygote after fertilization that contains double Chromosomes as compare to egg cell.
