charcoal is obtained by removing volatile materials from woods as we give heat to wood in the presence of little oxygen charcoal is formed
charcoal is good fuel then wood due to
following reason-
#it has high calorific value (heat per unit mass)then wood
#do not produce harmful gases(co2) like wood
#is environmental friendly

When wood is heated with limited supply of air, the water and other volatile substances get removed and charcoal is formed.
Charcoal is better as it has high calorific value,it is smokeless and easy to handle and convenient to use
