Nature can incorporate CO2 into carbohydrates through photosynthesis (6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2), and the enzyme acetyl CoA synthase/CO dehydrogenase can reduce CO2 to CO. To mimic the latter process chemically, CO2 can be reduced to CO using the reverse water-gas shift reaction (RWGSR)20 as depicted in Fig. 2.
