Coke is better fuel than coal because of the following reasons which are presented below.
1. Coke has high calorific value than coal.
2. Coke produces more heat than coal though they have equal masses.
3. Coke does not produce any smoke on burning.
4. Coke burns with smokeless flame.
5. Complete combustion takes place in case of coke.
Therefore, coke produces less air pollution compared to coal.

Coal and coke both are as fuels.

  • Coke produces more heat than coal on an equal mass basis.
  • Smoke is not obtained when coke is burnt
  • Coal has a Volatile matter content whereas Coke has relatively very low Volatile matter content which suits it for a better fuel.
  • Coke has higher calorific value than coal.
  • It is also used as a reducing agent in smelting iron ore in a blast furnace.
  • In blast furnace iron making coal is not as strong as coke.
