Answer:

Kashmiris want freedom from India because Kashmiris have historically never identified as Indian. They also want freedom because India has, in the past, tended to impose one definition of the Indian identity on the Kashmiri people. This, in turn, has resulted in persistent discrimination against Kashmiris.

Before I go into details, I want to make clear that I’m not going to be bifurcating the Muslims and the Pandits of Kashmir in this answer. Much of the past discourse surrounding Kashmir tended to have revolved around religion, an approach I disagree with. They have been reiterated and emphasized by supranational organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. And it isn't just India. The Pakistan Army has committed their fair share of violations too. While Pakistan attributes these atrocities to the Indian Army's violation of the Line of Control, and India attributes them to the increased presence of extremist violence entering the Kashmir Valley from the west, the abuses, at the end of the day, affect ordinary Kashmiri citizens...
