Ore of copper is Copper sulfide or Copper glance. When it is roasted or heated in presence of excess oxygen it gets converted to copper oxide and sulphur dioxide. This copper oxide reacts with remaining copper glance to form copper and sulphur dioxide.

Copper's oxidation number is +1.
