The difference between a dictatorship and a democracy is that the people have a choice on who will lead them. In both systems of government, there can be a good or bad leader. Both Abraham Lincoln and Alexander the Great are considered some of the greatest leaders for their respective countries in their times, but Lincoln was elected while Alexander inherited the throne from his father (I know that this is technically monarchy, but monarchy is just dictatorship where the line of succession is based on family lineage). Meanwhile, both Adolf Hitler and James Buchanan are considered bad leaders (although to different degrees), with Hitler making himself a dictator after being elected and Buchanan keeping the democratic institutions of the United States. The difference in these situations is that a dictator stays in power for life, but in democracy this does not occur. The people can impeach or just not reelect a failed leader, but the people in a dictatorship must hope that their leader dies if they are bad.

TLDR: Bad leaders of democracies can be removed from office, bad dictators cannot.
