Dissent is a relatively new concept in legal terminology. A Judge's opinion can be different from the majority view as his opinion is guided by his own conscience. This opens up new avenues for discussion and interpretation. A dissenting opinion after much analysis can ultimately evolve as the law of the land. In the U.S. Supreme Court the dissenting opinions of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court has often formed the basis of majority decisions.
