An electromagnet needs a soft iron core. A nail will work. Wrap a coil of wire around the wire. Connect a battery to either end of the wire and you have an electromagnet. The more coils the stronger magnet. The larger battery the stronger magnet.

Answer:
An insulated copper wire is wrapped on a soft iron piece forming a coil. When current is passed through the coil using a battery and a key the iron piece behaves like a bar magnet as long as current is being passed. Such a magnet is called an electromagnet.
Hope it helps!
