Answer:

Federalism is practiced in Indian in the following ways:

1. Through the creation of Linguistic states - The creation of linguistic sates was the first major test for federalism in India.

  • Many states were created. Some were created on the basis of geography (Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Nagaland), some were created on the basis of language (Tamil Nadu, Kerala). This was done to ensure that people who speak the same language can live in the same area.
  • Some leaders thought that it would lead to disunity of the county but through the years of experience it has showed that it has rather strengthen the unity of our country.

2. Through Language Policy - Second test for Indian federalism was the language policy.

  • Along with Hindi there were 22 official languages identified in India though Hindi is spoken widely (40%) in India. The Central Government has not imposed Hindi on states where different languages are used.
  • Candidates in Examinations which are conducted by the Central Government can choose any of the languages from Scheduled Languages.
  • The use of English as a official language was to be stooped in 1965 but many non-Hindi speakers proposed that it should not be stopped. So, English along with Hindi became the official languages of India.

3. Center - State Relations - Center sate relations is one way in which our country has strengthened its federalism in practice.

  • Prior to 1990, the same party used to rule in the state which is ruling in Center and if any states did have any other different party then it was forced to follow the orders of Center.
  • All this changed in 1990 when the number of parties increased, this meant that now there was going to be a greater competition. This was the era of Coalition Government.
  • Through Coalition Government, parties now had to share powers and had to work efficiently otherwise they wont get elected in the next elections.
