grignard reagent is organo-metallic compounds of magnesium in which magnesium metal is directly bounded to carbon atom of alkyl group & halogen atom i.e. (R-Mg-X)... grignard reagents is highly reactive.

When alkyl halide is treated wid pure & dry Mg metal in dry ether as solvent to

form alkyl magnesium halide i.e. grignard reagent.

R-X + Mg DRY ETHER > R-Mg-X

e.gCH3I+Mg ----> CH3-Mg-I (METHYL MAGNESIUM IODIDE)
