first of all let us understand what sovereign means.
it means having absolute power or supremacy.
the word has been derived from latin word 'superanus' meaning supreme.
sovereignty has to aspects-
1. external sovereignty
2. internal sovereignty
by external sovereignty it means freedom from external interference. no nation can dictate our foreign policies, international relations, which power group to suppport or which treaty to sign.india was not a sovereign under british rule since we were under foreign yoke
by internal sovereignty it means all the citizens and associations within the nation are subject of sovereign athourity.
hence it can be concluded india is a sovereign nation

Answer:

India is called a sovereign country because the Preamble of the Indian constitution defines India to be a 'Sovereign' country; meaning India has its own supreme law and not a matter of any additional state or nation. Moreover, India is independent of any kind of external intervention in its domestic operations.
