The lymph nodes filter the lymph fluid as it passes through them. White blood cells, such as B cells and T cells, attack any bacteria or viruses they find in the lymph. When cancer cells break away from a tumour, they may become stuck in one or more of the nearest lymph nodes.

Affected lymph vessels bring unfiltered fluids into the lymph node to be filtered while efferent vessels carry clean fluids away from the lymph node and to the cardiovascular system where it helps form the plasma in the blood . overall lymph nodes work like a biological filtered system .
