India plays an important role in a democracy. Media is the backbone of the democracy. Media plays crucial role to shape a healthy, sound and fruitful democracy. Democracy is the only institution which can make or mar the government by creating the public opinions.

The media can promote democracy by among other things, educating voters, protecting human rights, promoting tolerance among various social groups, and ensuring that governments are transparent and accountable. ... The paper explains the constraints that hobble the media's ability to play a positive role in new democracies
