How is mercury obtain from cinnabar?

Cinnabar (HgS) is the only important ore of Hg. It is concentrated by froth floatation method and mercury is extracted from this ore by heating it in air at 773-873 K (auto reduction). The mercuryvapors thus obtained are condensed to give liquid metal.

Extraction of mercury from cinnabar. Cinnabar being sulphide is is concentrate by froth floatation method. The pulverized are is kept in water containing pine oil & the mixture is agitated by passing compressed air. Ore forms froth with oil and come to the surface and are skimmed off while impurities are left in water.
