The question is very broad and i can try to answer it a very narrow context.

The brain has specefic processing areas for differnt stimuli, such as vision, audition etc. each of these areas in themselves is divided into specialised xones that serve to detect differnt aspects of the stimulus.

for example in the visual cortext there are areas with neurons that detect contours of objects and other ares that detect direction.

so the neurons in these regions fire action potentials inresponse to the stimuli that they are particularly tuned to generating a pattern that gets integrated in higher processing centers wich eventually makes us aware of the stimulus.

Message in our brain interpreted by millions of sensory nerves
First an receptor receives an electrical impulse from an stimuali and sends to sensory neurons and then sensory neurons to relay neurons and then relay neurons sends to motor neurons and motor neurons sends these to effectors and this responds an action.
