Methane is emitted in large quantities during anaerobic decomposition of organic matter in soil ,water and sediments. Incomplete combustion of fossil fuels also produce is methane and other hydrocarbons.

Methane trapped the Solar radiations and heat the earth's atmosphere.. resulting in greenhouse effect.
