Music appeals directly to the sense of hearing. It does connect us to the past. But we have at least four other senses. Sight, smell, taste and touch. They can transport our minds back in time just as effectively. Looking at old photographs or seeing a house where you used to live. The smell of an old flame's perfume, the taste of a school dinner or childhood sweets, and the feel of the sort of bedding you slept under as a child. They can all transport you back.
