(i) Nitromethane can be prepared from alpha chloro sodium acetate by reacting it with Sodium nitrite. Here sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride is formed as a by product in this reaction.

(ii) Nitromethane is formed from alpha nitro isobutylene by reacting it with acid in water as a medium. In this reaction Acetone is formed as a byproduct in this reaction.
