Ozone is a gas in the atmosphere that protects everything living on the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Sun. Without the layer of ozone in the atmosphere, it would be very difficult for anything to survive on the surface.
The ozone layer acts as a filter for the shorter wavelength and highly hazardous ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun, protecting life on Earth from its potentially harmful effects. When the sky is clear, there is an inverse relationship between stratospheric ozone and solar UVR measured at the Earth's surface.

MAIN REASONS :
The major reason for ozone depletion was related to CFCs. Chlorine in the CFC's react with Ozone (O3), reduces Ozone layer. From1980 many actions have been taken by countries to prevent usage of CFCs. As per Montreal protocal, today more than190 countries signed the treaty to reduce usage of CFCs.
Today we have alternate technologies in place of CFC as a refrigerant. Also, there are other substances like Methyl bhromide has been banned from use.
These actions will stop further depletion of ozone layer...!
HOW TO MAINTAIN / PROTECT :
* Avoid buying and using aerosols and sprays composed of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)
* .Avoid using fire extinguishers with halogenated hidrocarbon since it is a very agressive substance for the ozone layer.
* Avoid buying insulating material made up of CFC. Instead you can use dark chipboard cork that performs the same function and does not contaminate the environment.
* Maintain air-conditioning clean because if they do not function properly, they emmit CFC to the atmosphere.
* Check the frezeer and car air-conditioning. If they do not function properly, have them repair because they may have leaks.
* Opt to buy a refrigerator or an air-conditioning without CFC.
* Report wether you know that products with bromomethane are used in some sown fields and crops because these substances are contaminating.
