Membrane biogenesis is the process which involves the synthesis of cell membrane with the help of proteins and lipids. Endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for the synthesis of these membranes.

Membranes synthesised by this process of membrane biogenesis help in dividing the cell into structural and functional compartments. Membranes of the cell altogether are called as endomembrane system. The endomembrane system includes different membranes suspended in the cytoplasm and the plasma membrane.

Answer:

The process of plasma membrane formation is called membrane biogenesis. The proteins and lipids are first synthesised in rough endoplasmic reticulum and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, respectively. These are then transported to the Golgi complex for their modification.
