Answer:

There are two major functions of small intestine. One is complete digestion of food and the other is absorption of food.

In the digestion process, the initial part of small intestine which is called as duodenum is involved. The bile juice from the liver and the pancreatic juice from the pancreas get mixed with the food here. The bile juice helps in making the food alkaline and the pancreatic juice which contains trypsin and lipase digest the food. The trypsin breaks down proteins and lipase breaks down fats.

Further, the intestinal juices produced by small intestine itself help in the complete digestion. The intestinal juices convert carbohydrates into glucose, fats into fatty acids and glycerol and proteins into amino acids.

Here, the digestion process complete and the absorption process starts.

The small small intestine is designed so to absorb digested food :-

The walls of small intestine have finger like projections called villi. These finger like projections help in increment of the surface area. And hence, the absorption process takes place easily.

The finger like projections called villi are connected with blood vessels. These blood vessels absorb the digested food and transport it to all the cells in the body.

This is how small small intestine helps in in the absorption and digestion of food.
