How is sodium hydroxide manufactured in industries ? Name the process.
In this process a gas X is formed as by-product. This gas reacts with lime
water to give a compound Y, which is used as a bleaching agent in the
chemical industry. Identify X and Y and write the chemical equation of

Answer:

The process is known as chlor alkali process. In this process brine (a mixture of NaCl and water) is entered in a beaker. In this beaker two electrodes are immersed connected to a battery and current is allowed to flow. Now

2NaCl + 2H2O --------> 2NaOH + H2 + Cl2.

So there are two gases that releases one is chlorine gas and here it is x .

Also,

CA(OH)2 + Cl2 ---------> CaOCl2 + H2O

Here y is CaOCl2.

So,

X : Cl2

Y : CaOCl2.

Hope it helped.
