They send electric/sound signals which eventually hit the bottom of the ocean floor, the time it takes to reach the bottom of the ocean floor and to come back indicates how deep that part of the ocean is .An apparatus called sonar is used to locate underwater objects and to find the depth of water.it sends out high frequency sound vibrations called ultrasonic vibrations, into the water.the time taken by the vibrations to return is then used to calculate the distance of the reflecting surface.

First SONAR wave is send in to the sea. Then when it returns they capture it's time and calculate the distance.
